Highlights in Activism
This Association for Women Faculty has made tremendous gains for women at the University of Arizona. Since its founding in 1982, this organization and its members have worked to change aspects of campus life that discriminate against women. The Association successfully:
- pushed for a salary equity adjustment process to equalize salaries between female and male faculty members with comparable experience. See our Pay Equity page.
- brought issues of sexual harassment, tokenism, and the "chilly climate" into the open
- challenged parental leave laws and tenuring practices which discriminate against women who also wish to be active parents
- proposed and helped to implement changes in these parental leave and tenure procedures, as well as hiring practices
- originally implemented a campus-wide orientation for new and junior faculty members (initially begun for female faculty, this program is now run by the university for all new faculty)
- pushed the University to hire and tenure female faculty at the same rates they do male faculty
- highlighted the concerns of minority women as well as those of academic professionals
- monitored the status of women at the U of A through surveys and studies, including an initial Salary Study , the Kay Moore Report, and the Ron Oaxaca Report
- pushed for the creation of the Arizona Regent's Committee on the Status of Women, a tri-campus committee that recommended the establishment of a Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) o n each campus. At the University of Arizona, this Commission on the Status of Women is charged with implementing the Arizona Board of Regent's recommendations. These recommendations are highlighted in CSW's Vision 2000 Report. AWF is connected to CSW through the mutual commitment to improve to campus climate for women. CSW also focuses on student and staff concerns, and differs from AWF in that its members are appointed, not voluntary.
This list is just a sampling of some of the activities and actions of the Association for Women Faculty. The Association has kept issues important to women in the forefront of administrative concerns, and has actively mentored hundreds of women at the University of Arizona. The achievements of the organization are a testament to the fact that AWF can bring about change through "activism and commitment".
